Weddings are beautiful, emotional, unforgettable — and expensive. Even the most budget‑conscious bride will tell you that the dollars add up quickly. When I look back at my own wedding, there are a few things I would absolutely splurge on again without hesitation… and a few things I wish I had slowed down on, researched more, or simply handled differently. If you’re planning your wedding right now, consider this your friendly, honest guide from a bride who learned some lessons the real‑life way.
My “Oops, I Definitely Overspent” Moments
1. Overpaying for Photography
Listen… I did not know that engagement photos were included in most wedding photography packages. So I paid for engagement photos AND then paid full price for wedding photography that included engagement photos. That was a hit to the budget that could’ve been avoided if I had done more research on wedding photography packages. Photography is absolutely worth the investment — but paying twice for something that should’ve been bundled is a no no.
2. Rushing the Decor Process
Impatience will cost you every time. I was so eager to “just get it done” that I rushed decisions, changed my mind multiple times, and ended up overspending on décor that could’ve been sourced more affordably or planned more intentionally. When you’re excited, it’s easy to say yes to everything. But décor is one of those areas where slowing down saves money and gives you a more cohesive look.
The Things I’d Splurge On Again Without Hesitation
Some wedding expenses feel like luxuries. Others are foundational — they shape the entire experience for you and your guests. These are the areas I believe are absolutely worth the investment.
1. Flowers
Florals set the tone. They soften the space, elevate the atmosphere, and create the visual language of your wedding day. Whether you go lush and dramatic or simple and elegant, quality florals make a difference.
2. Photos
Even though I overspent, I don’t regret investing in photography itself. Your photos are the one thing that outlives the day. They become your memories, your legacy, your story. A good photographer is worth every penny — just make sure you understand the package before you swipe your card.
3. Food
People will forget your centerpieces. They will forget your favors. They will forget the exact shade of your bridesmaids’ dresses.
But they will never forget whether the food was good. Good times are built on full plates, warm meals, and guests who feel cared for. Feeding people well is hospitality at its finest.
4. Decor
When done intentionally, décor transforms a venue into an experience. It creates the mood, the warmth, the romance — the feeling your guests carry with them. Décor doesn’t have to be expensive, but it does need to be thoughtful. And when it’s done right, it’s worth the investment.
Where you spend your money should reflect your values, not pressure or trends. I learned to slow down, rushed decisions are expensive decisions. Ask questions, packages often include more than you think. Splurge on the things that shape the experience: food, florals, décor, and photography. Don’t be afraid to cut back on things that don’t matter to you. At the end of the day, your wedding is about love, joy, and the people who show up to celebrate you. Everything else is just extra.
