Hello Queens! There are so many pageant coaches out there and it can become very overwhelming trying to filter through and find the person that can help you get to your dream title. There are many factors to consider when it comes to finding the right pageant coach for you, and I want to share with you the characteristics that I feel are the most important.
Experience and results
When you are paying someone your hard-earned money and they have the title of coach or trainer you want them to have some experience and have yielded successful results in what they are teaching you. You want to work with people who have done what you are trying to do. Your interview coach should have some sort of literary, public speaking, resume building background with results of helping people land their dream jobs or a successful amount of pageant clients who have won interview and on stage question awards. Your fitness trainer should be extremely fit and healthy themselves, with health and nutrition qualifications. Your walking coach should have a modeling, runway, or dance background. You want to work with people who are experts in their field, specialize in pageantry, and have the results to prove it either by their own success or the success of their clients.
Relevant involvement
Work with coaches who remain involved in the pageant world. Coaches who know what the trends are, coaches who still attend and judge pageants, coaches who have their own network of fellow pageant colleagues that may also be a resource to you. Working with a coach who is relevant and involved in the pageant community gives you so much more visibility as a client. Having a relevant and involved coach will also help you because your coach is aware of what is happening in pageant culture and will be able to tailor your preparation to that.

Relatability
When it comes to pageant coach shopping you not only want to work with the best of the best but you also want to work with someone who is relatable and personable, someone you can see yourself getting along with outside of the pageant world. Relatability in mentors is so important because when you can relate to someone you can be vulnerable with them, and vulnerability leads to those aha, soul-searching moments that allow us to inspire others and share our stories. It is also easier to learn from and teach someone that you can relate to because you have common things in life to exchange. So whether you and your coach are both people of color, are both family women, are both from the same town, or simply share the same passion for pageantry, having common ground will be a good foundation for the growing relationship.
Endless support
A lot of life can happen between the time that you start your preparation and actually get on stage. You want to work with the coach that will support you no matter what the results of the pageant are, and a coach who is genuinely interested in you, because pageantry is simply a part of you, not all of you. Some coaches just want to have more headshots plastered on their success wall and will only promote the clients that win the titles that they feel are prestigious. Don’t work with these people. Work with the people who support and respect you after crowning, and value your heart over your crowns. A truly supportive coach will not pressure you, they know who you are and what you like to do outside of pageantry, and they check in on you because they see you as more than a payment plan.
I hope this was helpful in finding the perfect pageant coach for you, and I hope that once you find your perfect fit that y’all have a beautiful relationship! Great pageant coaches truly have a lasting impact on their girls and are such a light in the pageant world!
